Compton, in southeast Los Angeles County, is mostly a city of detached houses. Its 2021–2029 Housing Element counts 68.5% of roughly 24,600 homes as single-family detached, and half of all residential building here happened between 1940 and 1959. Six homes in ten are older than the I-710, which opened in 1964.
Houses that age get the full protection routine from our movers in Compton: runners over the floors, pads on door jambs and railings, and bed frames and dining tables taken apart before they meet a narrow hallway. Heavy pieces leave on dollies instead of sliding across old floors.
Houses here also sit close to their neighbors. Compton's zoning allows side yards of just 3 feet, or 5 feet for a house of two or more stories, where most nearby cities ask for 5 to 10, and the Housing Element itself calls those standards liberal. When a back unit or workshop sits behind the main house and the driveway doesn't reach it, the way to the truck can be that narrow strip, so the crew walks it before loading, pads the fence and the house corners, and carries mattresses and long pieces on edge.
About one home in five is in a multifamily building, split fairly evenly between 2-to-4-unit buildings and larger complexes, and our apartment movers work both. The city also has 13 mobile home parks, including parks on West Alondra Boulevard and South Atlantic Avenue. Each park's management decides where a truck may stand, so check with the office before moving day and pass the answer on to us.
Richland Farms has its own parking rules. Ordinance 2298, which enacted section 12-9 of the Municipal Code, requires every vehicle parked on a street inside the district to display a valid permit, and the district is a 24-hour permit zone. It runs from Alondra Boulevard south to Greenleaf Boulevard and from Wilmington Avenue east to Compton Creek, and street-sweeping restrictions still apply on top of it.
Residents get permits, temporary ones included, from the Business License Division at City Hall on South Willowbrook Avenue, and a tenant's application needs the property owner's signature. If you're moving into or out of Richland Farms, ask the division a few days ahead whether the truck needs a temporary permit, and keep the driveway or the curb in front of the house free for it.
The permit district, like every city rule, ends at the city line. Mapping L.A. lists East Compton and West Compton as separate communities next to the city, and LA County profiles about 2.9 square miles of unincorporated Compton. On county streets, county parking rules and posted county signs govern the curb, so confirm which side of the line an address sits on before picking the truck's spot.
Richland Farms is where a moving truck may share the street with a horse. The area was zoned for farming under a condition Griffith Compton set when he gave the land away in 1888, lots run from about half an acre to three acres, and the city's Residential Agriculture zone allows horses, barns, stables, corrals and workshops. Outbuildings count as rooms: packing crews box tools and tack the same way they box a kitchen, shelving comes apart like any other furniture, and the animals travel separately with a livestock hauler.
| Area or housing type in Compton | What to plan for on moving day |
|---|---|
| Richland Farms, Alondra to Greenleaf, Wilmington to Compton Creek | 24-hour permit district: ask City Hall about a temporary permit for the truck, and mention barns and workshops when you book |
| Postwar single-family streets across the city | Floor runners, jamb pads and furniture disassembly for houses built in the 1940s and 1950s |
| Back units and rear garages | Side yards may be only 3 feet wide: walk and measure the path before loading starts |
| Mobile home parks, 13 in the city | The park office sets where the truck can stand; confirm it before moving day |
| East Compton, West Compton and other county pockets | County parking rules and signs apply; the city permit district does not |
Moving services in Compton start at our only base, 5530 Jillson Street in Los Angeles. From there the city is about 11 miles south on the I-710, around 18 minutes without traffic. Metro describes the 710 as the freight corridor tying the ports to the rail yards and central Los Angeles, so the drive shares lanes with a steady stream of diesel trucks.
Alameda Street is the surface alternative. From just north of the 91 in Compton to 25th Street at the Vernon line, the Alameda Corridor's freight trains travel in a trench 33 feet deep, and cross streets bridge over it, so trains never hold up traffic on that stretch. When the freeway jams, Alameda is one way around.
We work 8AM – 6PM, Monday through Sunday, and a same-day move is possible when a crew is free. Weekday rush hours slow the 710 in both directions, so a morning booking means driving in with commuters, while a midday start usually misses the worst of it. For a large house with a garage or barn to empty, an early slot leaves daylight for unloading at the other end.
At about 11 miles out, Compton sits well inside the 30-mile line, so the standard 3-hour minimum applies, not the 4-hour one, and overtime starts after 8 hours. Local moving is billed by the hour, from $119 cash or $129 card for two movers and a truck Monday through Thursday, plus a $30 gas fee, and double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles.
Carson shares a city line with Compton, so a move between the two is a short hop for Carson moving crews. Gardena lies west along Rosecrans Avenue and El Segundo Boulevard, two of the boulevards that cross Compton, which makes moves to and from Gardena a straight east-west run. Metro counts Downey, like Compton, among the I-710 corridor communities, and movers serving Downey leave from the same Jillson Street base.
