Monterey Park covers 7.73 square miles of the western San Gabriel Valley in Los Angeles County, and most of it went up in one push. An earlier city housing element put the majority of the housing stock at pre-1970, the legacy of a 1950s building boom, and the city has had little vacant land left to build on since. For movers in Monterey Park, that age shows up indoors: these houses were laid out for the furniture of their day, not for a modern sectional or a king bed. Not every lot is flat. The zoning code has separate standards for hillside lots: where the average grade tops 20 percent, a house may sit just five feet back from the front lot line, and steep back yards must keep a flatter usable area. Monterey Park's municipal code keeps vehicles rated at 10,000 pounds gross weight or more from stopping, standing or parking on residential streets. The exception is a truck that is being loaded or unloaded, or one doing work at the address. Box trucks built for household moves are usually rated above that line, so on a residential block ours pulls up, works and leaves; it does not sit at the curb waiting for the start time.
Some blocks are permit-parking districts on top of that. The city runs two kinds, one restricted at all hours and one from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., and residents can get free temporary permits for guests on city holidays and on three non-holiday days a year, up to 15 per residence per day. If your street is signed for permits, ask the city's permit program before moving day whether the truck should display one of those temporary permits.
Street sweeping is the rule people forget. Residential streets and alleys get swept once a week and the city's boulevards four times a week, restrictions are enforced Monday through Friday, and the sweep usually comes the day after trash pickup, so trash on Friday means a Monday sweep. On the 13 holidays the city lists, there is no sweeping and no sweeping ticket.
That turns the calendar into a trade-off. Saturday and Sunday carry no sweep restrictions but bill at the Friday-through-Sunday rate, while a Monday-through-Thursday date costs less and may land on your sweep day. We check the sweep day on the city's map when we book and plan the truck's spot around the posted hours.
The city's downtown is Garvey Avenue between Garfield and Alhambra Avenues, and every winter it hosts the Lunar New Year Festival. For the 2027 festival the city plans to close East Garvey from about 5 p.m. on Friday, January 22, to about 6 a.m. on Monday, January 25, along with side streets including Baltimore, Lincoln, Russell, Nicholson, Everett and Edgley. If a lease on one of those blocks ends that weekend, we load before the closure or after it lifts, and Garfield Avenue, which the city keeps open north to south, is the way in and out.
Atlantic Boulevard gets a heavier sweeping schedule than the side streets, four passes a week like the rest of the city's boulevards, so posted no-parking hours come around often there. For a condo or apartment on Atlantic, we read the signs on the block the week before and plan the load from the complex's own drive or from the nearest side street where a truck may legally stand while it works.

Every crew leaves from our only base, 5530 Jillson Street in Los Angeles, and the drive to Monterey Park is about 5 miles on surface streets, around 12 minutes without traffic. The city is bounded by the 10 on the north, the 60 on the south and the 710 on the west, and when those freeways back up at commute time, the surface streets around them slow as well.
