No, tips are not included, and it’s up to you how much to tip your movers. Tips are always appreciated but not required.
Your apartment moving cost depends on factors, such as the type and size of your property, the complexity of your move, the number of bedrooms, the volume of your items, zip code, etc. At SOS Moving, we offer flat and hourly rates. The hourly rate depends on the number of movers to be involved and the size of the moving truck. Flat rate is based on the volume of belongings you need to move, and it’s the best option for long-distance moves. To know your moving cost, please contact us or submit a form on our website to request your free quote.
You should schedule your move date as early as you can. If you’re moving locally, at least 1-2 weeks in advance, for long-distance moves, we recommend getting a quote at least 2-4 weeks before your move date.
You can choose any convenient day for your relocation, and yes, we can help you move on weekends and holidays.
A safe relocation is our goal, so we’ll provide you with a detailed list of items that are prohibited to transport. It includes perishables, hazardous materials, firearms, batteries, etc. We also don’t recommend packing your personal and irreplaceable items, including family heirlooms, family photos, jewelry, documents, etc. Carry them with you during the move.
We accept cash, all major debit and credit cards, and certified checks. We don’t accept personal checks. There will not apply any transaction fee on card transactions.
Yes, we’ll contact you prior to delivery. We’ll deliver your belongings within the given moving arrival window. In case the window is no longer possible, we’ll also contact you in advance and set another delivery time.
Malibu is a long, thin city in western Los Angeles County, and most of it hangs off a single road, Pacific Coast Highway. Many beach houses sit on the ocean side of that road, garage and front door toward the traffic, living room toward the sand. The carry starts on a highway shoulder, so the crew plans the load around two questions: where the truck can legally stop, and how many steps lie between the tailgate and the door.
The east end is rebuilding. In September 2026 the City issued its 100th permit to rebuild after the January 2025 Palisades Fire, and the first Certificate of Occupancy for a finished home went to a house in Big Rock. A rebuilt house comes with new floors and fresh paint, so the crew lays floor runners and pads the door frames before the first box crosses the threshold. Set the move-in date by the certificate, not by the builder's estimate.
Behind the coast, in canyons such as Latigo, Corral and Encinal, homes sit up long, steep driveways where a loaded truck may have no room to turn. In that case the truck stays on the road and the crew carries uphill, which adds time you want to know about in advance, not on the day. Photos of the driveway and the gate let us settle that on the phone.
For movers in Malibu, the size of the house is rarely the hard part; the curb is. PCH is not a city street but a state highway under Caltrans jurisdiction, and the City notes that construction or other activity along it may need a Caltrans permit. Our truck does not take a traffic lane there. It uses posted, legal shoulder parking, and where the shoulder is narrow the crew accepts a longer walk instead.
On city streets, Malibu has its own Oversize Vehicles Ordinance, Chapter 10.18 of the municipal code. A vehicle longer than 23 feet, wider than 80 inches or taller than 82 inches counts as oversize, and a commercial one may stay at the curb for two hours before it has to move at least 1,000 feet. The exemption covers trucks picking up or delivering goods at a building on a residential street. So the truck parks at your address to work, not down the block to wait.
The rules get enforced. Since July 2024 the City has used a contracted parking enforcement team to back up the Sheriff's Department, and it names Point Dume, Winding Way and Central Malibu as places where enforcement is most needed; blocked roadways and the oversize ordinance are both on its citation list. A cone or a trash bin in the street holds no legal spot, so we agree on the truck's position with you before the day.
A portable container or a dumpster is a separate matter. The City requires an encroachment permit for use of the public right of way, and Malibu Public Works issues it. If a container will sit in the street during your rebuild or clean-out, get that permit settled before the move date so the container and the truck are not competing for the same stretch of curb.
The east end, around Big Rock and Las Flores Canyon, is still recovering from the Palisades Fire. Caltrans repair crews are on PCH here: the August 2026 schedule listed weekday lane closures, as needed, from 9AM to 3PM between Las Flores Canyon Road and Sunset Boulevard, plus a single southbound lane from Pena Road to Tuna Canyon Road for retaining wall work. East-end moves get the earliest start of the day we can offer.
The Civic Center, around City Hall on Stuart Ranch Road, is where Malibu Canyon Road reaches the coast. From October through December 2026 a regional fiber line goes in under Civic Center Way, Webb Way, Stuart Ranch Road and parts of Malibu Canyon Road, and the canyon section in unincorporated county land is expected to stay under construction into March 2027. Our route from the base arrives along PCH, so for a Civic Center move the work matters in the last few blocks; for a move up the canyon it sits on the route itself.
Point Dume is a residential headland above popular beaches, and the City names it among the areas where parking enforcement is most needed. For a Point Dume move we fix the truck's spot before the day and, on a summer weekend, start as early as the schedule allows, before beach traffic builds.
Kanan Dume Road comes down to PCH at Point Dume past a gravel arrester bed, built by the county to stop runaway trucks before they reach the intersection and upgraded by the City in 2014. The road connects the western beaches with the 101 in the Conejo Valley. Zuma and Trancas sit farther up PCH, so the truck reaches them later than an east-end address, and most moves to and from the rest of Los Angeles still run along PCH and the 10, the same way the truck came in.
| Area or home type in Malibu | What to plan for on moving day |
|---|---|
| Beach house on the ocean side of PCH | Legal shoulder parking only, since PCH is a Caltrans highway; a carry from the shoulder, often with stairs |
| Big Rock and Las Flores Canyon rebuilds | Move-in after the Certificate of Occupancy; runners on new floors; weekday Caltrans work on PCH nearby |
| Canyon homes in Latigo, Corral, Encinal | Driveway photos ahead of time; the truck may stay on the road while the crew carries uphill |
| Civic Center and Stuart Ranch Road | Fiber work on Civic Center Way, Webb Way and Stuart Ranch Road, October to December 2026 |
| Point Dume | A named parking enforcement area; truck position agreed in advance, early start on summer weekends |
| Zuma and Trancas | Farthest up PCH from the base, so a later arrival than the east end |
From the base on Jillson Street the truck takes the 5 to the 10, rides the 10 to its end in Santa Monica and turns up PCH. That is about 33.9 miles, around 50 minutes without traffic, a figure the morning rarely honors. The 10 runs slow westbound in the morning rush and eastbound late in the afternoon, and on warm weekends PCH itself fills with beach traffic.
SOS works Monday through Sunday, 8AM – 6PM, and a Malibu job is planned backward from that 6PM line: the drive in, the carry from the shoulder or up the driveway, and the run to the new address all have to fit before it. For a large house going across Los Angeles, a separate packing day keeps the moving day short enough to stay ahead of the late-afternoon traffic on the 10. Overtime applies after 8 hours.
Weekdays add the Caltrans factor. In the August 2026 schedule the closures between Sunset Boulevard and Las Flores Canyon Road ran weekdays from 9AM to 3PM, and utility crews have also worked weekends, so no day is certain to be clear. Monday through Thursday is our lower rate, $119 cash or $129 card per hour for two movers and a truck, against $135 / $145 Friday through Sunday. Caltrans QuickMap shows the current closures on PCH, so look at it the evening before your move.
Distance sets the minimum. Malibu lies more than 30 miles from the base, so moves here carry a 4-hour minimum instead of 3. Drive time follows the rule on our rates page: double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles.
The winter risks the City lists are also the ones that shut roads: coastal erosion, flooding, mudslides and debris flows, especially where the Palisades Fire burned. The National Weather Service expects a higher chance of an active storm pattern on the Southern California coast. If rain closes PCH or a canyon road on your date, we talk it through with you before the truck leaves the base, not from a line of stopped cars.
Rebuild dates slip, and leases do not wait. A rebuild often turns one move into two moving services in Malibu: storage with SOS while the house is finished, then delivery once the Certificate of Occupancy is issued. The furniture waits in one place instead of riding between rentals.
Winter moves along the coast get packed for a wet carry from the shoulder: upholstery and mattresses wrapped, books in small cartons that stay manageable on beach stairs. Our packing service does that wrapping and boxing for you, room by room. Glass tabletops, art and other pieces that need extra handling belong with white glove moving, and a piano goes with a crew of four plus a $200 piano charge; see piano moving for the details.
Pacific Palisades shares the same stretch of PCH and the same repair corridor: in spring 2026 the Caltrans work zone ran from Temescal Canyon Road in the Palisades to Carbon Beach Terrace in Malibu, with reduced speeds through it. A move between the two runs along PCH, so the closure schedule shapes the day at both ends; our page on moving in Pacific Palisades covers that side.
Calabasas sits at the inland end of Malibu Canyon Road, and both cities belong to the Las Virgenes-Malibu Council of Governments that is building the fiber network. Its work on the canyon road runs into March 2027, right on the direct line between the two, so for Calabasas moves we check the work schedule along with the traffic.
Woodland Hills lies where Topanga Canyon Boulevard comes down into the Valley, and the same road meets PCH just east of Malibu. In August 2026 its lower end ran as a 15 mph work zone with flaggers and a scheduled full closure between PCH and Grand View Drive, so for a move to or from Woodland Hills we choose between Topanga and Malibu Canyon Road on the morning of the move, with QuickMap open.
