Rancho Palos Verdes, on the Palos Verdes Peninsula in Los Angeles County, is a city of houses. Its Housing Element, using state figures for 2020, counts 12,561 single-family detached homes among 16,334 units, or 77 percent, and just 2,381 units in buildings of five or more homes. Nine in ten of those detached houses are lived in by their owners, so the typical call for moving services in Rancho Palos Verdes is a full house with its garage, not a unit with a booked elevator.
The city spreads across the slopes of the Palos Verdes Hills, and the walk from the street to the front door often includes a grade, a tight turn or a run of outdoor steps. Before the first box moves, our crew walks that path, lays floor runners, pads the door jambs and decides which pieces ride a dolly and which go by hand. For a full house on a slope, we usually suggest three or four movers rather than two.
On a lot that drops away from the street, weight matters more than usual. Anything over 300 lbs needs a crew of three and adds $150. A piano goes only with a crew of four and adds $200. A safe in the garage or a heavy table on a lower terrace should be on the list you give us, so the right crew arrives on the first visit.
The box truck that movers in Rancho Palos Verdes bring is an oversized vehicle under city law. Chapter 10.36 of the municipal code, added by Ordinance 492, covers any vehicle longer than 22 feet, taller than 8 feet, wider than 7 feet or rated at 10,000 pounds or more, and a moving truck stands well over 8 feet. Without a city permit, such a vehicle may not stop or park on any public street or alley in the city, and signs at the city entrances spell that out.
Moving day works because of one exemption: vehicles actively picking up or delivering goods at a building, between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. Our crews work 8AM – 6PM, well inside that window, so the truck can hold the curb while we load or unload. It cannot sit there waiting, so if a move runs over two days, the loaded truck leaves your street at the end of day one, and overnight storage is billed at $200.
Several neighborhoods add their own layer. The city runs neighborhood permit parking in areas that include Seaview, Del Cerro, Island View, Ladera Linda, Seacove, San Ramon, La Rotonda and Rolling Hills Riviera. In those areas, don't count on open curb for friends' cars or a second vehicle; we settle the truck's spot with you before the day.
Eastview, the eastern part of the city along Western Avenue, joined Rancho Palos Verdes by annexation in 1983. The city calls Western the main north-south corridor for the South Bay, the peninsula and San Pedro, and it plans the stretch between Summerland Avenue and Palos Verdes Drive North together with the City of Los Angeles. Traffic on Western is the obstacle here, so for homes and complexes near it we load from a side street or the property's own lot, never from a travel lane.
Miraleste sits on the east side of the hill along Palos Verdes Drive East. The road's Switchbacks, between Crest Road and Palos Verdes Drive South, are a narrow stretch shared with cyclists and pedestrians, and the city has run traffic enforcement there. A loaded truck takes those turns slowly, so we choose the approach, from Palos Verdes Drive North or from Palos Verdes Drive South, by where the house sits.
Del Cerro is at the top of Crenshaw Boulevard, next to Del Cerro Park and the Portuguese Bend Reserve trailhead. Lower down, Crenshaw is a four-lane divided arterial, but up here the trail parking on Crenshaw is booked online through ParkMobile, and the Park Place spaces beside the park are held for permit holders. We plan Del Cerro loads from the driveway or the curb directly in front of the house and keep the truck out of the trailhead spaces.
| Area or home type in Rancho Palos Verdes | What to plan for on moving day |
|---|---|
| Detached house (77% of homes), often on a slope | Walk the path first, runners and jamb pads, three or four movers for a full house |
| Any public street in the city | The truck is an oversized vehicle: at the curb only while loading or unloading, 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. |
| Eastview, near Western Avenue | Load from a side street or the complex's lot, not from a Western Avenue lane |
| Miraleste, off Palos Verdes Drive East | Narrow Switchbacks shared with cyclists; approach picked by where the house sits |
| Del Cerro and Park Place | Permit parking and reserved trail spaces; no spare curb for extra cars |
| Seaview and Portuguese Bend | Land movement and road damage on Palos Verdes Drive South; check city updates the day before |
Moves on the south side of the city pass the Portuguese Bend landslide complex. The city reports a sharp increase in land movement from spring 2023 in Seaview, the Portuguese Bend Beach Club and the Portuguese Bend Community Association, with lost utility service, road damage and some homes red- or yellow-tagged. According to the same updates, SoCalGas suspended gas service to the Portuguese Bend community.
Palos Verdes Drive South crosses the moving ground. City updates describe worsening damage at the stretch known as the "ski jump" near Altamira Canyon, the city is drawing up plans to regrade parts of the road, and a temporary ban on bicycles and motorcycles along part of it has been on the city council's agenda. Closures for landslide study work were also scheduled on the road in February 2026.
For any address reached by this road, we check the city's Land Movement Updates page the day before, strap the load for a broken surface and take the damaged section slowly. If a closure falls on your date, we come in from the other end, by Palos Verdes Drive East or Hawthorne Boulevard, and tell you how that changes the drive. If your house has a yellow or red tag, say so when you call: the city's notice decides what access is possible, and we plan the job around it.
Every crew leaves from our base at 5530 Jillson Street in Los Angeles. The route is I-710 to SR-91, then I-110 and SR-1, Pacific Coast Highway, before the climb onto the peninsula on Western Avenue, Crenshaw Boulevard or Hawthorne Boulevard, depending on the address. That comes to about 30.4 miles and around 46 minutes without traffic.
The freeway legs are where the time goes. The 710 carries heavy port truck traffic, rush hours on the 91 and the 110 can stretch the drive well past the no-traffic figure, and the last leg on Pacific Coast Highway is a surface street with signals. Our day runs 8AM – 6PM, and on a peninsula job both drives come out of it, so we prefer a morning start that leaves the afternoon for loading and unloading, not for sitting in traffic.
Rancho Palos Verdes sits right around the 30-mile line from our base, so the minimum is 3 or 4 hours, depending on the address: three hours under 30 miles, four at 30 miles or more. We confirm which one applies when we quote your address. As our rates page puts it, double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles, and overtime starts after eight hours.
Whatever you are not taking should be gone before the truck arrives, because loading it costs crew time. The city's hauler, EDCO, picks up bulky items such as furniture, appliances, water heaters and TVs for single-family residents, with up to three free collections a year of up to four items each, booked by phone; household hazardous waste is excluded. Book early, so the pickup lands before moving day.
Packing a detached house is where most of the prep time goes, and our packing service can take the whole house or just the rooms you choose. For households leaving Seaview or Portuguese Bend while service and access there are uncertain, storage between homes holds the furniture until the next address is settled. For a grand or an upright on a hillside lot, read how we move pianos before booking.
Eastview and San Pedro share Western Avenue, and the two cities plan that corridor together, so a move across the line can be a matter of a few blocks. The San Pedro end follows Los Angeles rules, covered on our page about moving in San Pedro.
Hawthorne Boulevard and Crenshaw Boulevard both run north off the hill into Torrance, so a move between the peninsula and Torrance stays on surface streets the whole way; the other end is covered on our page about moving in Torrance. Pacific Coast Highway, the last leg of our drive in, continues through Torrance into Redondo Beach, and a move from the hill down to the beach can run on that same highway; see moving in Redondo Beach for that side.
