Your apartment moving cost depends on factors, such as the type and size of your property, the complexity of your move, the number of bedrooms, the volume of your items, zip code, etc. At SOS Moving, we offer flat and hourly rates. The hourly rate depends on the number of movers to be involved and the size of the moving truck. Flat rate is based on the volume of belongings you need to move, and it’s the best option for long-distance moves. To know your moving cost, please contact us or submit a form on our website to request your free quote.
You should schedule your move date as early as you can. If you’re moving locally, at least 1-2 weeks in advance, for long-distance moves, we recommend getting a quote at least 2-4 weeks before your move date.
You can choose any convenient day for your relocation, and yes, we can help you move on weekends and holidays.
A safe relocation is our goal, so we’ll provide you with a detailed list of items that are prohibited to transport. It includes perishables, hazardous materials, firearms, batteries, etc. We also don’t recommend packing your personal and irreplaceable items, including family heirlooms, family photos, jewelry, documents, etc. Carry them with you during the move.
We accept cash, all major debit and credit cards, and certified checks. We don’t accept personal checks. There will not apply any transaction fee on card transactions.
Yes, we’ll contact you prior to delivery. We’ll deliver your belongings within the given moving arrival window. In case the window is no longer possible, we’ll also contact you in advance and set another delivery time.
Norwalk, in southeast Los Angeles County, was built in one long burst. The city's Housing Element dates 64.1 percent of its homes to 1940–1959 and 87.3 percent to before 1980, and it calls the city essentially built out for decades. For movers in Norwalk that means postwar houses in the R-1 zone, where the code sets 5,000-square-foot minimum lots and a 20-foot front setback. The truck usually stands a short walk from the front door.
Households here run large, and that sets the crew size more than the floor plan does. The same document puts the average at 3.85 people per home, against about 3.0 countywide, and 22.3 percent of Norwalk households have five or more members. A full three-bedroom house with that many people usually needs three or four movers rather than two. Before the first dresser goes out, the crew lays floor runners, pads the door frames and takes the beds apart.
Apartments follow the zoning code. Norwalk's R-2, R-3 and R-4 zones cap buildings at three stories or 35 feet, so an apartment move here rarely means more than two flights of stairs. The crew plans stair carries and breaks furniture down upstairs, not on the landing. We ask the client to hold a parking spot near the stairwell and, if the building has an elevator, to reserve it for the move window.
Mobile homes are the third piece. The Housing Element lists Norwalk Mobile Lodge and Pioneer Mobile Estates on Pioneer Boulevard, plus Pioneer Trailer Park on Firestone Boulevard. Some parks require at least one resident aged 55 or older. The lanes inside a park are private property, so ask the park office where a moving truck may stop before you lock in the date.
| Area or housing type in Norwalk | What to plan for on move day |
|---|---|
| Postwar houses in the R-1 zone | Truck at the curb or in the driveway, a short carry across the front setback, runners and door-frame pads |
| Apartments in the R-2, R-3 and R-4 zones | Three stories at most: stair carries, furniture taken apart upstairs, a loading spot near the stairwell |
| Mobile home parks on Pioneer and Firestone boulevards | Private lanes, so ask the park office where the truck can stop; some parks are for residents 55 and older |
| Blocks with posted street-sweeping hours | No parking during the posted time without a City Engineer permit; pick a date off the sweeping day |
| Streets in the preferential parking program | Posted limits are waived only for permit holders, so plan the truck's spot in advance |
| Offices and shops along the Firestone Boulevard corridor | Zoning approval and a license transfer at City Hall before a move within city limits |
Norwalk posts street-sweeping hours block by block, and the municipal code bars parking during the posted time unless the City Engineer has granted a permit. The city website has a map of trash and sweeping days, so check your block before you choose a date. Parking complaints go to the Sheriff's Norwalk Station, whose list of violations includes blocked driveways, double parking and obstructed streets.
The code also keeps commercial vehicles over 10,000 pounds from parking within 150 feet of an intersection or a private driveway wherever the city has posted signs. Active loading and unloading is exempt, so the truck stays legal while the crew is working. On streets in the residential preferential parking program, posted limits are waived only for vehicles with a permit. Tell us about those signs when you book, and we will work out where the truck stands.
Two city programs deal with what stays behind. A yard sale needs a free city permit, each property gets two a calendar year, and a sale can run no more than two consecutive days. What does not sell can go to Athens Services, the city's hauler. It collects furniture and appliances on your regular trash day: up to five bulky items a week for a single-family home at no extra charge, and twelve free pickups a year for each apartment unit.
One more call before the truck arrives. Norwalk is split among three water providers, the Norwalk Municipal Water System, Golden State Water and Liberty Utilities, and the city's service map shows which one covers your new address. If your homeowners association asks for a certificate of insurance, SOS issues one for $50.
Crews leave our only base, at 5530 Jillson Street, and take the I-5 south: about 8.4 miles, around 13 minutes without traffic. Caltrans has widened the freeway between the I-605 and the Orange County line to four general lanes plus a carpool lane each way. Weekday rush hours still back it up, so a midday start or a weekend date keeps more of the clock on your furniture and less on the freeway.
We move Monday through Sunday, 8AM to 6PM, and a same-day move is possible when a crew is free. Norwalk sits well inside 30 miles of the base, so the 3-hour minimum holds, and in the words of our rates page, double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles.
Families who hire Norwalk long distance movers have one errand close to home. The Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk, which keeps the county's birth, death and marriage records, has its headquarters at 12400 Imperial Highway in Norwalk. Pick up certified copies before the truck is loaded rather than ordering them from another state; our long-distance moving service takes care of packing, loading and the drive.
Before you book Norwalk commercial movers, check the city rule: a business moving to a new address inside city limits must get zoning approval and transfer its business license at City Hall. Most of Norwalk's roughly 350 acres of industrial land runs parallel to Firestone Boulevard. Our office and commercial moving crews work seven days a week, so a weekend move can keep the doors closed for fewer business days.
A storage pod or a trash bin left on the street needs the city's permission through its engineering permit process. When the new place is not ready yet, our moving services in Norwalk include storage between move dates, which keeps furniture off the curb and out of that paperwork.
Downey borders Norwalk on the west, across the San Gabriel River, so a move between the two is a short run over one of the river crossings; our Downey moving crews handle that side. La Mirada lies farther down the same widened stretch of the I-5 toward the Orange County line, and moves there are covered on our La Mirada movers page.
Names blur on the Cerritos side. Cerritos College sits at Alondra Boulevard and Studebaker Road in Norwalk, while the city of Cerritos shares part of Norwalk's eastern boundary. Give us the street address and the city rather than the landmark, and see our Cerritos moving page for moves on the other side of the line.
