Marina del Rey is not a city. It is an unincorporated harbor community in Los Angeles County, and the County owns the ground itself: the Department of Beaches and Harbors manages the land and leases it to private companies that build and run the buildings on it. So hiring movers in Marina del Rey starts with two questions: who runs your building, and whose street will the truck stand on.
The LA Times Mapping L.A. profile, built on 2000 census figures, counted 91.8% of Marina del Rey households as renters and an average household of 1.5 people, low for the Westside and for the county. That points to a typical job: a studio or one-bedroom in an elevator building, timed to a lease date. Two movers and a truck suit that load; the crew costs $119 cash or $129 by card per hour from Monday to Thursday, and $135 or $145 from Friday to Sunday.
The water is part of the housing stock too. The Marina del Rey tourism board counts over 4,600 boat slips, and under County Code 19.12.1110 anyone living aboard for more than three days in a one-week period needs a liveaboard permit from the Sheriff's Department Harbor Master, backed by the dockmaster's authorization. Harbor rules also say nothing may be left or stored on the docks, so a boat move runs as a chain of short carries from the slip to the truck, with no stack of boxes waiting on the dock.
The 90292 ZIP code is bigger than the County's marina. Parts of Venice, the Silver Strand among them, were given 90292 in the 1980s, and the Marina Peninsula carries the same ZIP, yet both sit inside the City of Los Angeles. Via Dolce and the southern stretch of Via Marina mark most of the line: the Silver Strand and the Peninsula, toward the lagoon and the ocean, are City, and the harbor side is County.
The line decides who handles the curb. On City streets, questions about requesting temporary no-parking signs go to LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division. On County streets, Public Works installs the County's parking signs, and the Sheriff's Parking Enforcement Detail, which covers the Marina del Rey Station area, enforces them. We confirm which side of the line your address is on when we quote, so the crew arrives with the right plan for the truck.
County rules also have a name for a moving truck: a nonconforming vehicle, meaning anything over 20 feet long, 7½ feet tall or 8 feet wide. In the County's other nonconforming-vehicle districts, parking one without a permit is banned at any hour; the Marina del Rey district limits that ban to 1 a.m. through 6 a.m., and the Public Works FAQ exempts a vehicle while it is actively providing a service to a residential property. SOS works from 8AM to 6PM, so a marina job never touches those hours.
On a County leasehold, the building's management office sets the move terms, from the elevator booking to the spot where a truck may stand while it loads. The crew plans from what that office puts in writing, not from guesses about the building, and condo owners get the same terms from their association. The dock item matters more than it looks. Because nothing can be staged on the docks, the crew loads the truck in the order things come off the boat, and small closed boxes travel along a dock and up a gangway far better than loose bags. If the boat itself is staying in its slip, tell us what goes to the truck and what stays aboard before the clock starts.
The County side wraps around the harbor basins: apartment and condo complexes along Admiralty Way and Via Marina, plus short streets off Via Marina named for Pacific islands, such as Tahiti Way and Bora Bora Way. These are large leasehold properties, so the crew works through whatever garage, lobby or loading area management assigns, and the County's truck rules apply at the curb. A move between two County buildings stays under one set of rules; a move from a leasehold apartment to a Peninsula duplex crosses into City rules on the way.
The Peninsula runs, roughly, from the Washington Boulevard pier south to Via Marina on the ocean side of Pacific Avenue, with nautical street names in alphabetical order from Anchorage Street to Yawl Street. The City's Venice coastal plan sets it up for two units per lot, duplexes and multi-family buildings, puts all of its lots in the Beach Impact Zone and praises its walk streets as pedestrian amenities. Where a front door faces a walk street, the truck stops at the nearest legal curb and the crew carries the rest; if that curb has to be held, LADOT's temporary no-parking signs are the tool.
The Silver Strand sits on the east bank of the Ballona Lagoon, with Via Dolce on one side and Via Marina at its southern end. The City plan describes landscaped public pedestrian malls here, with names like Topsail Mall, and keeps the lots fronting the lagoon for single-family homes. For an address on a mall, the truck parks on the nearest street and furniture rolls the rest of the way on dollies, so we ask for the path from the curb to your door before the day, not at 8AM.

Every SOS crew starts from our one base, on Jillson Street in Los Angeles. To the marina the route is I-5 to I-10 west and then surface streets, about 21.7 miles, or around 36 minutes without traffic. Rush hours on the I-10 stretch that trip in both directions, and the surface streets at the coastal end add their own wait.
Our hours are Monday – Sunday, 8AM – 6PM, and a marina job is planned to end inside them. An early start puts the loading ahead of the afternoon rush, and a Monday-to-Thursday date is also the lower rate on our card. Warm weekends pull beach traffic onto Washington Boulevard, which the City plan calls a popular coastal recreation area between Ocean Front Walk and Via Dolce, so the Peninsula and the Silver Strand are easier to reach on a weekday.
July 4 needs its own plan. In the County's 2026 fireworks plan, entrances from Washington Boulevard to Pacific Avenue, Via Dolce and Strongs Drive were soft-closed from 1:00 PM, westbound through traffic on Jefferson Boulevard at Lincoln stopped at 2:00 PM, and NO STOPPING was posted on stretches of Culver and Jefferson Boulevards from 4:00 PM. The County warns that times and locations can change, so for a July 4 move we book the morning and aim to be done before the first closures.
The minimum here is 3 hours. At about 21.7 miles from the base, the marina is well short of the 30 miles where a 4-hour minimum starts. Drive time follows our rates page, where double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles; the figure for your own move is on the quote.
The moving services in Marina del Rey that fit this housing start with apartments. With nine in ten households renting in that census profile, the common job is a unit move set by a leasing office's elevator calendar, which is what our apartment movers plan around. Long corridors and dock walks reward even, closed boxes, and our packing crews pack to that standard when you would rather not do it yourself.
Moving aboard is its own case. A liveaboard permit gives you a home on the water, not room for a sofa, so furniture that will not fit the boat can go into storage while you settle in, and the same works for a gap between two leases.
