Hollywood, the Los Angeles neighborhood at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains, is really two moving jobs. The city's historic survey of the area describes dense flatlands on a strict street grid to the south and, to the north, the Hollywood Hills, the south-facing slopes of the range. For movers in Hollywood, that split decides where the truck stands, how many people come, and how far every box travels.
The flatlands hold a building type the survey singles out for Hollywood: the bungalow court. Whole colonies of courts went up a few blocks from the studios, a substantial number from the 1920s still stand, and the survey also found 1920s courtyard apartments. In both, front doors open onto a shared garden walk rather than the sidewalk, so the truck waits at the curb and the carry runs the length of the court. We pad the corners and door frames along the walk and keep one side clear so neighbors can get by.
After World War II, many original houses, courts and small apartment buildings gave way to larger multi-family buildings, so a single Hollywood block can put a 1920s court beside a much bigger post-war building. We find out which one we are walking into before the day. A court means a long, level carry; a larger building usually adds a lobby, a hallway and sometimes an elevator that all need padding.
Up the slopes, the city's surveyors could not even see many homes from the street: houses behind privacy walls, houses on sloping lots that face the view instead of the road, homes on private streets or inside gated communities. The same survey lists public stairways, retaining walls and pedestrian bridges as part of the hillside street system. Before a hill move we ask for photos of the route from the curb to the door, count the steps, and size the crew to the carry rather than to the number of bedrooms.
Hollywood is part of the City of Los Angeles, so the curb outside your building is LADOT's to manage, and its Special Traffic Control Division handles temporary no-parking signs. A reserved stretch of curb is what lets the truck stand at your entrance instead of around the corner. Tell us the address before you apply, and we will tell you how much curb the truck needs.
Film crews compete for the same curbs. When a production posts temporary no-parking signs under a FilmLA permit, that space is held for production vehicles with commercial plates, and FilmLA wants the posting request at least three full working days before the first day of filming, with notice to residents. If film notices go up on your block the week of your move, send us a photo; replanning the truck spot two days out beats doing it on moving morning.
In the hills the bigger threat is a Red Flag day. Once LAFD declares one, parking is banned on posted streets inside the Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, cars left there are towed, and the ban runs for at least 24 hours. LAist named stretches of Holly Drive in the Hollywood Hills among the posted streets; the signs carry a tow-truck symbol, and the city's NeighborhoodInfo lookup shows whether an address sits in a Red Flag Parking Zone. On a posted street we follow the LAFD alerts the day before, because a declared day pushes the truck off that stretch and lengthens the carry, or moves the date.
Larger buildings and condo associations set their own move rules. If yours asks for a certificate of insurance, we issue one for $50 and send it to the manager; if the elevator has to be reserved or moves are limited to certain hours, book that slot first and we will build the day around it. Whitley Heights covers hilly ground north of Franklin Avenue, east of the Hollywood Bowl. Architect A.S. Barnes designed most of its Mediterranean-style houses between 1918 and 1928, and the Hollywood Freeway later cut the original layout apart, so the streets no longer connect the way they were drawn. We plan the approach on a street map, not only a phone route, and settle the truck position before the crew starts loading.
Spaulding Square is the opposite case: a city historic district of modest one-story Period Revival houses built between 1916 and 1926. No stairs and short carries, but the floors and door casings are about a century old, so runners go down and casings get wrapped before the first chair leaves the house.
Near the Bowl, Milner Road and Camrose Drive both meet Highland Avenue, and on the venue's busiest concert evenings both are fully closed at Highland to everything except emergency vehicles. The Bowl says the closure also steers navigation apps away from those streets. If you live up either road, check the concert calendar against your date; we schedule loading and unloading early so the truck is gone before pre-show traffic builds.

The Dolby Theatre stands on Hollywood Boulevard at Highland Avenue, and the Oscars take over the block every year around the ceremony. For the 2026 show, all lanes between Orange Drive and Highland closed from March 5 until the morning of March 18, and the first side-street closure began three weeks before the ceremony. If your building sits on that stretch or the streets behind it, we load from outside the closure or help you pick a date that avoids it.
Two more dates belong on the list. On LA Marathon Sunday in March, the course runs along Hollywood Boulevard past the Walk of Fame and the Chinese Theatre, with most closures starting at 4 a.m. On the Sunday after Thanksgiving, the Hollywood Christmas Parade runs from Hollywood Boulevard and Orange Drive east to Vine Street, south to Sunset Boulevard and back west, and LADOT warns of closures and tow-away zones around the route from early Sunday. We check both calendars before confirming a Sunday job anywhere near the boulevard.
Every SOS crew leaves from one place: our base at 5530 Jillson Street, Los Angeles, CA 90040, the company's only location. To Hollywood the truck takes I-5 to US-101, about 13.4 miles, or around 20 minutes without traffic. The last leg is the Hollywood Freeway, the stretch of US-101 that links Hollywood with the San Fernando Valley through the Cahuenga Pass.
Without traffic is the exception. Weekday rush hours fill the 101 between downtown and Hollywood, so an 8AM start puts the truck in the commute, while a mid-morning start often rolls more freely. We work Monday through Sunday, 8AM to 6PM, and on hill jobs we favor the morning so the last trip up the steps happens in daylight.
Hollywood sits well inside 30 miles of the base, so the minimum is 3 hours; the 4-hour minimum applies only to addresses more than 30 miles out. On our rate sheet, double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles, and overtime starts after 8 hours, a line a long hill carry can reach sooner than a flatland apartment move.

Dates in Hollywood rarely line up on their own: an escrow closing on a hill house, a lease start in a flatland building, a closure week on the boulevard. When the new place is not ready, we can keep the load overnight for $200 or take it to storage until it is.

West Hollywood is a separate city, so the permit desk changes at the city line. WeHo issues its own Temporary No Parking signs for moving trucks, wants the application at least five business days before the move, requires signs on residential streets to go up at least 72 hours ahead, and generally reserves the curb for one day, 8am to 5pm.
