If you are comparing quotes, ask any Orange County moving company where its trucks start the day. Ours start at the base on Jillson Street in Los Angeles, pointed south on I-5. Seen from there, Orange County, California is not one market but a handful of freeway runs, and the run decides the minimum, the drive and how the day gets planned. When we give one figure for the whole county, it is measured to the Orange County Civic Center in downtown Santa Ana.
North County is the short end. I-5 reaches the county line at La Mirada, and Buena Park, La Habra, Brea and Fullerton are among the closest Orange County stops from the base; Anaheim sits only a little farther down the same freeway, so all of them carry the standard 3-hour minimum. Placentia and Yorba Linda add a turn east onto SR-91 and still stay inside the 30-mile line.
The coast is reached another way. Fountain Valley, on the same approach, stays under it. Costa Mesa and Newport Beach come off SR-55 and land past the line, which puts them at 4 hours.

For Santa Ana moving crews, the drive ends just past the Orange Crush, the interchange where I-5, SR-22 and SR-57 meet inside the cities of Orange and Santa Ana. It is one of the 23 cities that get fire service from the Orange County Fire Authority, so OCFA fire-lane rules apply in its apartment and condo complexes.
SR-22, the Garden Grove Freeway, leaves that same interchange and runs west through Garden Grove, just across the line from Santa Ana. Tustin sits just past Santa Ana on the same I-5 run and also stays under 30 miles, so its minimum is 3 hours too. Like its two neighbors, it gets fire service from OCFA, which matters in newer complexes where the drives between buildings are marked as fire lanes. A good share of South County has no city government at all. Ladera Ranch, Coto de Caza, Las Flores and the still-growing Rancho Mission Viejo are unincorporated; OC LAFCO counts about 44,000 residents in the built-out communities and expects Rancho Mission Viejo to add roughly 38,000 more. There is no city hall to call about the curb, and the master association and its gates usually set the terms a moving crew works under, so we ask for the current guidelines when you book.
Covenant Hills, the gated section of Ladera Ranch, shows how specific those terms get. The Ladera Ranch Maintenance Corporation's guidelines treat loading or unloading furniture in front of a home as contractor work. Contractors enter with a construction pass from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays and 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, with no work on Sundays or the listed holidays, and anyone still inside after those hours is escorted out. The association's 2024 rule changes sent contractor traffic through the Antonio gate.
Laid over our 8AM – 6PM day, that leaves a Covenant Hills weekday move that has to wrap by 5 p.m., a Saturday move that ends at 3 p.m., and no Sunday option. We size the crew so the load fits that window, not the other way around. If a Saturday delivery there cannot finish by 3 p.m., the load goes into our storage and comes in on the next day the gate allows work.
Rancho Mission Viejo is the part still being built, so a move there is often the first one into a brand-new house. The Los Angeles County stretch between I-605 and the Orange County line was widened with a carpool lane and a regular lane in each direction, and the interchanges at Carmenita Road, Valley View Avenue and Rosecrans Avenue were rebuilt; the last segment opened in 2022. To the Civic Center in Santa Ana the trip is about 25.4 miles, around 33 minutes without traffic.
Traffic is the part no map fixes. Both directions of I-5, and the SR-55 and SR-91 branches, slow down on weekday mornings and again in the late afternoon, so a job that starts at 8AM and ends near the evening rush can spend far longer on the road than the no-traffic figure suggests. On South County jobs we try to have the truck loaded and rolling before the afternoon slowdown builds.
Our hours are Monday – Sunday, 8AM – 6PM, and every job in the county has to fit inside them, drive included. Near the Civic Center the minimum is 3 hours; beyond 30 miles from the base it is 4 hours, and the rates page adds that double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles. Same-day moves happen when a crew is free, but a gated village with pass rules needs its paperwork first, so book those ahead.
Apartments bring their own local rule, and it is painted on the curb. Irvine, which contracts with OCFA for fire service, tickets or tows vehicles at red fire-lane curbs; OCFA's fire master plan guideline bans parking along any fire lane narrower than 28 feet; and state law bars a vehicle from even standing in a marked fire lane, attended or not.
