Your apartment moving cost depends on factors, such as the type and size of your property, the complexity of your move, the number of bedrooms, the volume of your items, zip code, etc. At SOS Moving, we offer flat and hourly rates. The hourly rate depends on the number of movers to be involved and the size of the moving truck. Flat rate is based on the volume of belongings you need to move, and it’s the best option for long-distance moves. To know your moving cost, please contact us or submit a form on our website to request your free quote.
You should schedule your move date as early as you can. If you’re moving locally, at least 1-2 weeks in advance, for long-distance moves, we recommend getting a quote at least 2-4 weeks before your move date.
You can choose any convenient day for your relocation, and yes, we can help you move on weekends and holidays.
A safe relocation is our goal, so we’ll provide you with a detailed list of items that are prohibited to transport. It includes perishables, hazardous materials, firearms, batteries, etc. We also don’t recommend packing your personal and irreplaceable items, including family heirlooms, family photos, jewelry, documents, etc. Carry them with you during the move.
We accept cash, all major debit and credit cards, and certified checks. We don’t accept personal checks. There will not apply any transaction fee on card transactions.

Van Nuys is a neighborhood of the City of Los Angeles, in the San Fernando Valley, and most of its households rent. In the 91405 ZIP code, census estimates for 2020–2024 put about 73% of occupied homes in the rental column, and two of every three housing units sit in buildings with five or more apartments. The LA Times Mapping L.A. project ranks the neighborhood's population density among the highest in Los Angeles County.
Much of that housing has some age on it: roughly 70% of the homes in 91405 went up between 1950 and 1989. In a two- or three-story walk-up from those decades, the stairs set the pace of the day. Railings get padded, landings get runners, door frames get wrapped, and bed frames and dining tables come apart inside the unit so they clear the turns.
Large complexes are a category of their own. About 43% of homes in 91405 are in buildings of 20 or more units, where a management office may set move hours, assign a loading area or ask for a certificate of insurance. If yours does, SOS issues the COI for $50, the resident books the elevator or loading slot with the office, and the crew works inside that window.
Mapping L.A. also describes a young neighborhood, with a median age of 28 and one of the county's highest shares of children 10 or younger. Cribs, bunk beds and changing tables come apart and go back together, with each piece's hardware bagged and taped to it. For a family-size unit on an upper floor, our apartment moving crews can add a third mover to shorten the stair work.
Because Van Nuys is part of Los Angeles, the curb follows LADOT rules. Temporary no-parking signs are handled by LADOT's Special Traffic Control Division, and for street work the City requires contractors to give that division at least five business days' notice before temporary tow-away signs go up. A moving-day request deserves at least that much lead time.
Painted curbs rarely save the day. LADOT keeps yellow curbs for commercial loading: a vehicle with commercial plates may stand there only while it actively loads or unloads freight, and only for a short capped period, Monday through Saturday. That covers dropping off equipment, not emptying a two-bedroom.
Van Nuys Boulevard is the special case for years to come. Metro is building the East San Fernando Valley light rail line along the boulevard from the G Line north to San Fernando Road, with stations planned at Victory, Sherman Way and the Van Nuys Metrolink stop, and the project is due to finish in 2031. Metro's FAQ says some parking on the boulevard will be removed, and the construction brings phased traffic changes and K-rail.
If the building faces the boulevard, say so when you book: the truck will likely stand on the nearest side street, and the crew plans the carry from there to the lobby. Before the date, the client's part of the job is short:
Van Nuys Airport covers 730 acres, and Sherman Way passes under its runway through a tunnel that the airport calls a key east–west connection. A truck crossing from one side of the airfield to the other takes that tunnel or drives around the field, so the route gets checked whenever a move starts on one side of the airport and ends on the other.
The airport's own ZIP code, 91406, is where Van Nuys looks most suburban: single-family homes make up about 46% of its housing, against roughly 30% in 91405. Houses add garages, sheds and patio furniture to the inventory, and a driveway often gives the truck a better spot than the curb.
The airport is a workplace as well; an economic study it cites credits it with more than 12,300 jobs. Offices and shops near the field move on business calendars, and our commercial moving crews can take a weekday or weekend date inside the 8AM – 6PM day.
| Van Nuys address or housing type | What to plan for on moving day |
|---|---|
| Buildings facing Van Nuys Boulevard | Light rail construction: K-rail, traffic changes and less curb parking; the truck goes on the nearest side street |
| Complexes of 20+ units in 91405 | Move hours set by the office, a COI if requested ($50), elevator or loading area booked by the resident |
| Walk-ups built 1950–1989 | A stair carry with padded railings, wrapped door frames and furniture taken apart in the unit |
| Houses in 91406 | Driveway loading where possible; garage and shed contents sorted before the crew arrives |
| Trips across Van Nuys Airport | The Sherman Way tunnel under the runway, or a drive around the field |
Every SOS crew leaves from the base on Jillson Street in Los Angeles. From there Van Nuys is about 26.2 miles by I-5 and SR-134, around 35 minutes without traffic. That figure stretches when I-5 past downtown and the 134 through Glendale and Burbank fill up in the morning and late-afternoon peaks.
Van Nuys sits inside the 30-mile line, so the minimum is 3 hours, and double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles. The working day runs 8AM – 6PM, Monday through Sunday, and an 8AM start keeps most of the loading ahead of the late-afternoon crush on the 405 and the 101. Two movers with a truck cost $119 cash or $129 by card from Monday to Thursday.
Anyone booking piano movers in Van Nuys for an upright in a walk-up should know the rule up front: SOS moves pianos only with a four-person crew, and a $200 piano fee applies. The service page explains how SOS moves pianos from start to finish.
Moves to Sherman Oaks are short hops, since Van Nuys and Sepulveda boulevards run straight south into it and the 405/101 interchange sits on its side of the line. Heading north, Van Nuys Boulevard carries on into Panorama City, and so does the light rail work zone, so the same side-street parking plan applies there.
A quote for moving services in Van Nuys comes down to three questions: how many stairs, where the truck can stand, and whether the route crosses the boulevard work zone or the airport. Have those answers ready when you call 909-443-0004, and the estimate starts from the right place.
