La Crescenta is unincorporated Los Angeles County land. Glendale wraps it on the south and west, La Cañada Flintridge borders it on the east, and the northern edge runs up against the Angeles National Forest. Even the Honolulu Avenue shopping district by Montrose sits inside Glendale's city limits. Two houses a few blocks apart can answer to different parking rules, so the first thing we pin down on a La Crescenta quote is which side of that line each address is on.
On the county side, Title 15 of the county code bars commercial vehicles rated at 10,000 pounds or more from parking on residential streets, with an exception for necessary loading and unloading. We take that rule at its word: on a county street the truck is at the curb to load or unload, and then it leaves. You can help by moving your own cars off the curb in front of the house before moving day and giving the neighbors a heads-up.
Glendale addresses answer to the city's Parking Services, which handles reserved parking permits and preferential parking districts. Inside those districts a resident permit lifts the posted time limits but not the No Parking zones, and a moving truck carries no resident permit at all. If either end of your move is on the Glendale side, ask the city about reserving curb space ahead of time; the crew parks where the city allows.
Single-family homes cover more than 82 percent of the community's land, and 83 percent of its housing was built before 1979; less than 1 percent went up after 2010. Expect original floors and door frames with decades of paint on them. The crew lays floor protection from the entry to every room it works in, pads the frames and takes apart beds and tables that won't clear an older doorway in one piece.
The valley floor rises toward the San Gabriel Mountains, and county planners describe the neighborhoods along the north-south streets, Ramsdell, La Crescenta, Rosemont and Briggs avenues among them, as hillside communities that are hard going on foot or by bike. That grade sits between the truck and your door. We park on the flattest stretch of curb near the house, strap heavy pieces to dollies and keep a mover on the downhill side of anything big.
Movers in La Crescenta also have to think about the top of the grid, where the neighborhoods back onto the national forest and parts of the community fall inside a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. Up there the truck stays tight to the curb and the lane stays open, because a fire engine has to be able to get past a loading truck.
South of the Foothill Freeway, Montrose began as a planned subdivision in the early 1920s, and the Honolulu Avenue shopping district next to it belongs to Glendale. Every Sunday, year-round, the Montrose Harvest market sets up on the 2200 to 2400 blocks of Honolulu at Ocean View Boulevard. For a Sunday move near the shopping park, we bring the truck in on side streets and pick a curb spot clear of the market blocks. Glendale even runs a separate employee parking permit for the Montrose and Sparr Heights business districts.
North of the freeway, La Crescenta's grid runs parallel to I-210, which sets the whole street pattern on a diagonal. Foothill Boulevard is the commercial corridor on that side. About 22 percent of the community's homes are in multifamily buildings; if your building manager asks for a certificate of insurance before the move, SOS provides one for $50, so forward the manager's requirements when you book.
Five schools sit inside the community, three elementary, one middle and one high school, and residents have told county planners that school pick-up traffic is a sore point. On a weekday that traffic shares the street with your truck. If you live near a campus, mention it when you book, and the crew will set the truck up clear of the drop-off and pick-up lines.
| Where in La Crescenta | What to plan for on moving day |
|---|---|
| County streets north of I-210 | County code lets heavy commercial vehicles stand on residential streets for loading and unloading; move your own cars off the curb out front beforehand |
| Hillside blocks off Ramsdell, La Crescenta, Rosemont and Briggs avenues | A grade between curb and door: the flattest curb spot, strapped dollies and, for a full house, a third mover |
| Montrose, south of I-210 | Streets laid out as a 1920s planned subdivision, mostly older houses: floor runners and padded door frames room by room |
| Honolulu Avenue shopping district (Glendale) | Sunday market on the 2200 to 2400 blocks; Glendale parking rules apply there, not the county's |
| Blocks near the community's five schools | Weekday drop-off and pick-up lines; say so at booking so the truck stays out of them |
Our only base, on Jillson Street, is about 19.9 miles from La Crescenta: I-5 north, then SR-2, the Glendale Freeway, which meets the Foothill Freeway in La Cañada Flintridge just east of the community. Without traffic the drive takes around 26 minutes. Both freeways fill with commuters on weekday mornings and late afternoons, and crews work Monday – Sunday, 8AM – 6PM, so a full house on a sloped lot is easier to finish in one day when it starts in the morning.
La Crescenta sits inside the 30-mile line, so the 3-hour minimum applies, not the 4-hour one for farther addresses. Our rates page puts the travel rule in one line: double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles.
A move that never leaves the valley, from a Montrose rental to a house above Foothill, say, books as a local move on the same 3-hour minimum. Boxes packed and stacked by the door keep the truck's curb time short on a county street; if you'd rather not pack, add packing services to the booking. A piano goes only with a four-mover crew and a $200 charge, and on a sloped front walk those four sets of hands earn their keep; see piano moving for the rest.
Foothill Boulevard keeps running west into Tujunga, part of the City of Los Angeles, where city parking rules take over from the county's and the foothill grades come along. Glendale surrounds the community on the south and west, so a move out of La Crescenta can end a short drive away on Glendale streets, with the city's permit rules at the new address. Our moving services in La Crescenta follow one habit on both runs: the parking plan changes at the city line.
