El Segundo, the South Bay city on the south edge of LAX, keeps all of its housing on one side of Sepulveda Boulevard. The city's housing element places every resident west of it, on about 533 acres with the Chevron refinery to the south. That compact footprint shapes moving services in El Segundo: every block's curb is shared by everyone who lives on it, so where the truck will stand is the first thing we settle for any address.
Regional planners at SCAG count 7,463 homes in the city, and single-family houses are less than half of them: 47.7 percent, against 61.7 percent across the region. More than 40 percent of units sit in buildings of five or more apartments, and renters outnumber owners. Street sweeping adds one more clock. Sweeping days and times shifted when trash collection moved to a four-day week, so read the posted sign on your block for the actual move date instead of going by memory, and pass the window along to us with the address.
The city's pavement program lists alleys in the northeast residential quadrant and in Smoky Hollow, and a house that backs onto one can often load from the garage side. We compare that carry with the street-side carry when we plan the move, and a truck working an alley leaves the neighbors' garages reachable.
Smoky Hollow, the roughly 120-acre district between Main Street, Holly Avenue, Sepulveda Boulevard and El Segundo Boulevard, has its own specific plan. That plan treats curb parking as the district's scarce resource, calling for restriped streets and a business parking district. A studio or shop move there goes smoother when the truck's spot is agreed with the landlord ahead of time, and the crew stages furniture and boxes by the door so the truck spends little time at the curb.
On a workday El Segundo holds around 70,000 people, by the count of the city's economic development team, in a city of about 17,000 residents. Every SOS truck leaves from one base, 5530 Jillson Street in Los Angeles. To El Segundo it takes the I-710 to the I-105 and follows the I-105 west to its end at Sepulveda Boulevard: about 21.4 miles, around 29 minutes without traffic.
Metro is rebuilding that corridor for ExpressLanes. The stretch from Sepulveda to Central Avenue is under construction and due to open in 2028, work between Central and the I-710 is set to start in fall 2026, and the project runs to 2029. Metro also schedules extended weekend lane closures in one direction, on and off through early 2027, so for a weekend date we check the posted closures and allow extra time for the drive in.
Rush hour here runs the opposite way from a bedroom suburb: the workday crowd pours in each morning and drains out each late afternoon on Sepulveda, Rosecrans and Imperial Highway. Inside the 8AM – 6PM window, a move that loads in the late morning and unloads before the afternoon outflow spends the least time idling in either wave.
El Segundo sits inside the 30-mile radius around the base, so the minimum is 3 hours rather than the 4 that farther addresses carry. The rates page also sets two general rules: double drive time applies to moves over 10 miles, and overtime starts after 8 hours.
For local movers in El Segundo, the three neighbors are close in three different ways. North of town, LAX sits between El Segundo and Playa Vista, and Sepulveda Boulevard passes under the airport's south runways through a tunnel finished in 1953, the first of its kind in the country.
